Hello Ladies,
This is a call for submissions for a poetry anthology, tentatively titled "Cranky Town" - which is dedicated to poems infused with the irritability, despair, sadness and horror of PMS or Menopause. The collection will benefit the women's shelter herstreet: http://www.laruedesfemmes.com/e_herstreet.htm
If you've never written a poem, don't fret. It doesn't have to be majestic or profound. It could be a haiku, free verse, or one where you use each letter of your first name to come up with a line, as in:
Leave me alone
I hate you
And all living creatures
No one understands my
Everlasting wretchedness
Here is a link to a bunch of different types of poetry:
I think Cranky Town will be a funny and therapeutic book. Not only for its readers, but for its writers. So please, next time that hormonal torrent descends, take pen to paper, and vent your emotion in a poem. You will not only be turning your rage into creativity, but also doing a charitable service for the many women who rely on the services of herstreet.
The deadline for submissions is August 1st, 2009.
I look forward to reading your poems!
Sincerely,
Liane Balaban
Editor in Chief
Here are some recent submissions to inspire you:
A haiku by Kathy Baker:
they say dry as sand
or bone, cotton, riverbeds
i say dry as me
An ABC poem by Elizabeth Arana:
A bright crimson dot encroaches. For girls, hell is jeering
kilos, laughing, menacing. Now, ovaries protest
quietly, ruing scales tipped. Understand? Vexation!
Waterweight! Xanadu: Y-chromosome zen.
Hello... same Liane Balaban who was in school in North York with my sister, Lianne? Because of the almost-same name we never forgot you and have been happily following your acting career :)
ReplyDeleteMy name is Carly, I'm a writer and would be pleased to contribute a poem to your anthology, but would love to learn more....

For some reason, when I click on the Herstreet link it takes me to the poetry link. Also, I wasn't sure where to submit poems (do you want them in the blog comments?)

As it nears 4:00 a.m. I rise from my bed, which felt more like a rotisserie, and leave the room heading for my PC. Clair really wanted to sleep together, but I have been too HOT to be near. But still he gave it another go, because he loves the softness of being together as we sleep. By 2:00 a.m. He had to move to the other bedroom because I was so very hot. The weird thing is, I don't always feel the heat, but after Clair left for the other bedroom, I began to feel the warmth on the sheets beneath me. Yet after nearly 2 hours of trying to get comfortable, I gave up the idea of rest, and decided to get up. I was feeling so uncomfortable, I didn't know what to do with myself. So, until this discomfort subsides, I will sit at the PC, reading and writing. Now that it is after four a.m. I will give bed another go. I'll think of this as an unexpected oasis in the night, when I am wandering the sands of the Sahara on my bed. Oy! Menopause! (so 'pause' already ! )
