The collection will benefit the women's shelter herstreet: http://www.laruedesfemmes.com/e_herstreet.htm

If you've never written a poem, don't fret. It doesn't have to be majestic or profound. It could be a haiku, free verse, or one where you use each letter of your first name to come up with a line, as in:

Leave me alone
I hate you
And all living creatures
No one understands my
Everlasting wretchedness

Here is a link to a bunch of different types of poetry:

I think Cranky Town will be a funny and therapeutic book. Not only for its readers, but for its writers. So please, next time that hormonal torrent descends, take pen to paper, and vent your emotion in a poem. You will not only be turning your rage into creativity, but also doing a charitable service for the many women who rely on the services of herstreet.

The deadline for submissions is August 1st, 2009.

I look forward to reading your poems!

Sincerely,

Liane Balaban
Editor in Chief

Here are some recent submissions to inspire you:

A haiku by Kathy Baker:

they say dry as sand
or bone, cotton, riverbeds
i say dry as me

An ABC poem by Elizabeth Arana:

A bright crimson dot encroaches. For girls, hell is jeering

kilos, laughing, menacing. Now, ovaries protest

quietly, ruing scales tipped. Understand?
